How to use the identifiers

  • Several names, one molecule. A peptide can carry a development code (LY3298176), a generic name (tirzepatide) and brand names (Mounjaro, Zepbound). The code and generic name identify the molecule; a brand name identifies one approved product. Each row lists the names we have met in the literature, labels and registries.
  • CAS number. The Chemical Abstracts Service registry number for the substance. Salts and the free base have different CAS numbers; where a profile gives one form, it is the one shown here.
  • PubChem CID. The compound record at the U.S. National Library of Medicine, which carries the structure, computed formula and weight and the synonyms the record has collected. Some protein-sized medicines (such as dulaglutide) have no PubChem compound record.
  • UNII. FDA's Unique Ingredient Identifier, used on U.S. drug labels. It links to the substance record in FDA's Global Substance Registration System.
  • Sequence, formula and weight describe the molecule in its stated form. Weights are rounded; for large modified peptides the value is the one computed by PubChem.
  • Primary target or action condenses the mechanism section of each profile, where the sources are. "Proposed" means the mechanism has been shown only in cells or animals.

An identifier describes a molecule. It does not show that a product sold under that name contains it, is pure, or has any benefit. Products sold online under these names are not approved medicines, even when they share a name with one. See approved vs unapproved peptides and what a certificate of analysis can prove.

How the identifiers were checked

On 13 October 2026 every PubChem CID was queried against the PubChem API to confirm the record's title, molecular formula and the CAS numbers it lists, and every UNII was queried against FDA's Global Substance Registration System (GSRS) to confirm the substance name and its registered CAS numbers. The check found that earlier versions of 25 profiles carried UNII codes that do not exist in FDA's registry, and that 9 CAS numbers belonged to a different form or a different substance. All were replaced with the registered values, 4 missing UNIIs and 3 missing CAS numbers were added, and where a profile describes the free base while the medicine uses a salt, both identifiers are now stated. Entries that could not be confirmed in either source are marked "not assigned" rather than guessed. Corrections are welcome through our corrections policy.
